For my treat, I'm offering one lucky reader the choice of any of my eBooks. I will choose a random winner after midnight on Monday, October 29th. So leave a comment below and tell me what part of Halloween do you enjoy the most?
For me, it's the memories of my 4 kids when they were little and had supreme confidence that their Mom could make them into any character they could imagine. I learned to sew from my Mom when I was a kid who always wanted new clothes for my Barbies. She taught me how to hand-sew their clothing, so once I was old enough to use her old 1948 Singer machine, she taught me to make my own clothes also. I still have that old Singer. I won't ever give it up. There are few moving parts to break, and as long as I keep it oiled, it runs like a charm! Plus I feel my late Mother sitting next to me as I use it, since that's how she taught me.
My kids gave me challenges. My oldest son loved bears, so I made him a teddy bear costume which he wore until only the hood with the ears still fit him. Likewise my third son loved rabbits, so I made him a bunny suit that he used to wear daily...until he also outgrew everything except the hood. I still have both hoods to remind me of my sons' bestial earlier natures!
When my second son wanted to be Batman, I made that costume for him. A year later his younger brother wanted to be Robin, so I made that suit also, from the same pattern. I had two BFFs with twin sons, so once my boys were too big, first one's sons then the other's sons were able to be Batman and Robin! I hope some other kids are still enjoying those costumes! When my oldest son wanted to be a particular character from his favorite cartoon at the time, Dark Wing Duck, I agonized over how to do it, then made him into: Mega-volt, including an aluminum-foil-covered electrical plug on the top of his head. Most candy-givers had no idea who he was supposed to be, but my husband said that when one Dad opened the door and yelled out, "Look kids, it's Mega-volt!" it made our boy radiant with happiness. My daughter was a pumpkin when she was a baby, then a teddy bear (note: furry costumes are great when Halloween weather is cold! No need for a parka over it when the fake fur keeps them warm!) Then she was a princess, and that costume went to my BFF with 2 girls younger than her. I also made her a fairy with wings one year.
Husband and I have thrown and attended adult Halloween parties, but usually we prefer to spend the time together, after the kids are in bed. Of course there was that fringed loin cloth I made him out of ultra-suede...talk about howl-worthy! Ah-oooh!
So what about you? Is it the candy? The costumes? The kids' excitement? The adult parties where you can dress up? What is it you look forward to when it's Halloween time?
