Learning to Love
Elena ran away from her life on Earth, to accept a job on another planet. When she falls in love, she’s worried her past will pursue her. Can Dakota help her stay on the planet when an earther with a grudge pursues her?
Elena is not happy with her life on Earth, which is now a dying planet. Young, fertile females are not allowed to move to other planets, but she saves enough money to bribe the necessary people to allow her to escape. Once on Mesa Verde, she settles in to her life as an English, Composition and History teacher of older teenagers. Meanwhile Dakota, who was a senior in her first year of teaching, has decided that she's the only woman for him. But despite having been declared an adult many years ago, she avoids him. When the circumstances of her fulfilling the yearly duly of all citizens, camping out for a night, is interrupted by a wild animal, it's lucky for her that Dakota followed her, to be sure she was safe. He kills the animal, and they're forced to sleep in close proximity in his tent in a cave, to escape a rainstorm. Nature takes its course, and they emerge the next morning as lovers--which results in a hand-fasting ceremony. But there's a reason Elena has been keeping Dakota at arm's length. When a star ship brings with it a cruel Earther determined to bring Elena back with him, it takes all of Dakota's family to ensure that can't happen.
Yes! My muse finally gave me a sci-fi story! My fave genre to read. I have ideas for other stories in this world.
Also yes, the humans on Mesa Verde develop green skin. The indigenous plants are healthy and digestible, but they have a strong chlorophyll base, which travels to the skin of the consumer. The shade of green varies, depending on what color the skin would have been without the added green. But the humans who live there consider it a minor price to pay, for being able to live in the sunshine and eat local plants they grow for themselves.
