*Two years ago, I was finishing dinner when the doorbell rang. I went to the door and opened it to see a short Asian-looking adult woman at the door, whose face appeared to be disfigured. I looked at her questioningly. She growled at me: "Trick or treat." I shrugged, figuring she might be one of the local homeless folks, and put a couple of snack bars in her shopping bag. But her aura was creepy enough for me to be sure to lock the door afterwards. I told my family about her while we ate dinner, and they told me not to open the door again that night. I didn't.
**Last year, I was visiting my Mom who has dementia, and was late coming home, so it was already dark, and the kids had been doing the candy duty. As I slowed down to pull into my driveway, I saw a lone small figure walking along the street close to my house. I pulled into the driveway and got out of the car, only to have the feeling that someone was watching me. I turned to see that it was that same odd-looking woman in ordinary clothes again, coming up my driveway. I looked at her questioningly. "Can I help you?" She grimaced at me. "It's that time again," was all she said. I walked up to my front porch and saw that the kids had put a bowl with candy on the table out front. I grabbed the last Kit Kat bar out of the bowl and put it into her bag. She looked in the bag then at me. "That's all?" "It's all we have left," is what I said in reply. She nodded and turned to walk back down the driveway.
***So what do you think? Eerie? Will she be back this year? I've never seen her any other day of the year, and this is a fairly small town...she must live close, if she walks the neighborhood. My kids are telling me not to answer the door after dark. But I kind of want to see if she'll be back.
