A quick comment about my mini-book reviews. I posted them on Goodreads and was contacted by Danielle D. Smith, who was gracious about my not liking her book. We are now Goodreads friends, which is how it should be. I don't expect everyone to like my books either. But an honest review, that tells what was disliked, allows readers to decide if that will bother them or not.
And in case you are wondering, I give a 4 to books I will reread because I enjoyed them that much. I give a 1 to a book I finished, but didn't ever warm up to. Note that I would never put up a review of a badly-written book, because I would just delete it without finishing it, from my Kindle. So by definition, if I put up a review, it means it was good enough to finish. Maybe not my cup of tea, but still well-written.
I was on vacation in July and took my kindle with me. We were so far up north in Minnesota that we could see across the lakes to Canada from our campsite! It was quiet, except for the loons calling, and beautiful. Nothing like a week immersed in nature to make you feel whole. Don't be surprised if my next book has that as its setting...I loved it that much!
Anyway, I read three books on my kindle while I was there. Two I bought from Changeling Press, because I love their erotic novellas! Especially the ones written by Cynthia Sax! Boy, can she write hot scenes! Enough to make my eyebrows melt!
I read 2 of Cynthia's Demon Chronicles, and I'll probably go back for more!
Demon of Convenience: Mina is a "vessel", which means that she needs to bond with a demon, hold onto his power, and magnify it for him, so that he will become invincible. She wants to do this with a friend, so she will still be able to have sex with others, but he sends their mutual acquaintance, an icy demon named Taurinus...he's also a deadly assassin. She thinks he dislikes her; in fact, he's been fighting his attraction to her for a very long time. When they mate, the fireworks begin, and repeat over and over again! Phew!
This Enchanted Demon: Augustine, the "friend" from the previous book, needs to bond (mate) with a vessel to save his sister, who is being held against her will. He goes to a sorceress seeking a vessel, but finds the sexiest woman he has ever seen, who loves hot sex and plenty of it! Misunderstandings abound, mostly so that they get to have make-up sex! Who cares about the plot anyway? Lots of hot erotic scenes abound!
Black Dog and Rebel Rose, by Danielle D. Smith.
I've never read anything by this author, but her blurb on Goodreads described the hero as "hawt", and hinted at erotic scenes to make you sweat. Plus it was being offered at a reduced price by Amazon, so I bought it.
I was not pleased that I didn't get a cover with my novel.
I was pleased that on the first page she quoted from Puscifer, one of the bands featuring Maynard of Tool. Maynard loves women and sex, and many of Puscifer's songs celebrate that in the most sexual way that they can.
Black Dog and Rebel Rose are both demon hunters...each has a different reason for doing it, but they are both very good at what they do. They hunt, torture, and kill demons...vampires among them. Since I'm really tired of sexy vampire romances, I was glad to see vampires more like Nosferatu than Twilight. These walking dead deserved to die, and they were spectacularly dispatched by both hunters. That's what I found unpleasant. The descriptions of the killings of the demons took up a whole lot of space. I guess if you are writing for a male audience, that's what you do. As a woman looking for the "hawt" hero and the erotic romance, I was a bit let down. They do get down to it, then they do some more killing. Then they fight, then kill more demons, then do the deed again. Repeat again. There is a HEA ending, because these two are fated to be together. I guess.
If you like zombie-killing and demon-blasting, this is your book. I may let my husband read it before I delete it. And maybe my sons who play violent video games like Duke Nuke'em might enjoy the splatter. Me, not so much.

So since I LOVE movies with things that blow up and big monsters/robots, of course I had to go see Transformers.
Good: The bimbo from the previous movies was not in this one...nor was her motorcycle.
Bad: Shia Lebouf was still the "hero".
Good: The robots got lots of screen time after the boring beginning.
Bad: When we first "meet" the new heroine, whose only purpose is to be attractive in high heels, it's with a "crotch-shot" up her legs at her panties. Honestly, fan-boys, try talking to a real-live girl and maybe you'll get to do more than just drool on your shirt!
Bonus: how much did the author of She Comes First have to pay for the product-placement when hero's Mom shows him the book cover as her cure for his relationship problems? I guess if it teaches one young lad how to please his ladyfriends, then it's worth it.
Overall? Better than the second movie, not as good as the first one.

Okay, now I don't find him sexy, but you gotta admit that Matt is always dependable, always a good actor, and he picks interesting movies. I didn't know what to expect of this movie, and was very pleasantly surprised. If you like romance stories, with a true-love that can't be denied, you'll love this movie. If you believe there is "one" person who is right for you, then you'll love this movie. If you believe that destiny can be chosen by us, then you'll love this movie. What can I say? I loved this movie!
And considering the lack of things that blow up, aliens, or robots, that's very unusual!
Question: why are the attractive black men always the "friend", or the "paranormal element", instead of the hero? Ponder at will.
Pirate Radio
Okay, this stars a bunch of British guys, most of whom are shag-worthy, if you get my Britishism. We are told the plot is based on reality, in that during the years 1966-67, BBC radio would not play rock and roll, so the British were unable to hear the music we in the USA were grooving to, when the British invasion included the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, etc. etc. So an enterprising group of DJs boarded a ship and planted it right outside of British waters, then proceeded to blast rock and roll music 24/7, for the happy ears (and other places, this being rock and roll, an old black euphemism for erotic movements!) of the British public.
Kenneth Brannagh plays the uptight politician who doesn't want that vile music corrupting the youth of his or any other country. He does his best to get them shut down, even willing to "bend" the law to do so.
The exuberance and excitement reminded me of A Hard Days Night, the first Beatles movie. You groove to the tunes, laugh, enjoy the youthful antics of the cast, and really get to care about the characters. The ending is a total feel-good moment that will make you laugh and maybe even cry with joy.
Another movie that I loved, with no aliens/robots/explosions? I must be getting mellower in my old age! NOT!!!
